Investigating and implementing corrections takes a great deal of effort. Whilst we will attempt to
correct genuine errors, we do ask for your co-operation in ensuring that you don't submit inappropriate
corrections.
Checking and processing corrections that comply with these conditions and then
applying changes to the database will take a number
of weeks and can take up to three months.

the search results page. Alternatively, if the FreeBMD Project has scan images available you can

here.
You must read the points below BEFORE submitting a correction
FreeBMD transcribes EXACTLY what is in the GRO Index. Your correction
must include (in the Source box) an identification of the information that enables you to assert
that your correction corresponds to what is in the index, not a
justification for what the information should be and not an explanation of the way you came to your
conclusion. If you cannot make
such an identification you should be adding a Postem.
If the error is in the Index, we will NOT be able to apply your correction. In particular:
It is NOT possible to change an entry to be the same as data from Census, IGI, Certificate, Family Bible, etc.
This is because entries are recorded as they appear in the GRO Index.
It is NOT an error to find names appearing twice under alternative spellings in the Index. This happened
when names were poorly written on the original copy.
Do NOT submit corrections to change the spelling of the District Name. Districts are spelt and
abbreviated in a variety of ways. FreeBMD records the ACTUAL spelling from the index and links this to
the definitive form.
It is NOT an error for an event to be shown in the Registration District named after a neighbouring town.
A Registration District covers a larger area than just one town.
It is NOT an error to find that an event that took place in January is shown in March. Events are
recorded in QUARTERS (e.g. January, February, March make the MARCH QUARTER), not MONTHS.
Events are recorded in the quarter that they were REGISTERED, not the quarter when they occurred. It is
perfectly possible that a birth in May will appear in the September Quarter.
Corrections MUST be based on evidence of THIS entry in the index. Corrections based on the reference
of the other party to a marriage or to the spelling of the name used for another event for the same person are
NOT valid
In some circumstances there are both handwritten and typed scans available and the FreeBMD policy is that the two should be seen as completely independent attestations to the same historical event and the two should be kept and served as separate records if they are different. When submitting a correction you must verify your correction against the scan(s) referenced by clicking on the icon for the entry you are reporting.
Where the transcriber was unable to read the record fully, uncertainty will be shown by use of
[]{}_*. The majority of such entries will be corrected in the fullness of time as better
quality source becomes available. It should be noted that as all corrections are verified before being
applied, it is unlikely that our source will be any more readable now than it was when it was transcribed,
and such corrections are unlikely to be applied.
Feedback on this form will be passed to the person identified in our records as being responsible for
feedback on this transcription. This may or may not be the original transcriber.
Please confirm that the correction you are about to submit complies with these points, and that you have
viewed a copy of the index to confirm the validity of the change you are requesting. Check this box to confirm
Unless EXPLICITLY stated above, neither FreeBMD nor the transcriber of this record has any further
information about this record. This form CAN NOT in any circumstances be used to attempt to contact the
transcriber with queries about records as CORRECTIONS ONLY will be forwarded to the person responsible
for feedback on the transcription.
You must NOT use this form to report that the spouse is missing from a spouse search - see
here for help on finding a missing spouse. Bear in mind
that FreeBMD is a work in progress and the spouse record may be on a page that has not yet
been transcribed. Once you have found a missing spouse you can, of course, submit a
correction if that entry is in error or missing from a transcribed page.
You must NOT use this form unless you are able to tell us what the correct information is. Corrections
which simply ask for the entry to be re-checked will NOT be processed.
You must NOT use this form to make uncomplimentary comments (even in a lighthearted manner) regarding
the transcriber or transcription accuracy of the record.
You must NOT use this form to report that the link to a scan gives the wrong
page - see here for more information about scans and
(under Linking, The way it works) correcting the linkage.
This form is only to be used to report errors found as a by-product of searching. The
FreeBMD process for doing systematic error correction is by duplicate transcription of
each page. Handling systematic error corrections through the corrections process is not
cost effective so submission of a large number of corrections by an indivdual will be processed
only on a very limited basis (a few per month).
If you have identified that an entry on a transcribed page has not been transcribed
you should attach a correction to the immediately preceding entry (use a wildcard
search to get surrounding entries) filling in the details of the missing entry (only those
fields that are different from the preceding entry need be completed). The Missing entry or entries
box must be checked. If there are multiple missing entries fill in the details for the first and
check the Multiple entries box in addition to the Missing entry or entries box.
If the correction applies to multiple entries it is only necessary
to report the first but the Multiple entries box should be checked
When completing the source field, please just tell us, in as few words as possible, where you
found the information. Lengthy explanations, or, worse still, spirited advocacy or justification supporting
the correction, are unhelpful and likely to cause the correction to be rejected. The correction is also
likely to be rejected if there are references to sources other than those that relate to the content of
the GRO index (e.g. certificates) or to sources that are transcriptions.
